You Wanna Be Cool? No Pre For You!

In an article by Henry Blodgett for The Business Insider, he paraphrases Therese Poletti as saying,
“…we don’t think there is room for yet another player in the high-end smartphone market.  In the US, at least, this is now a battle between Apple and RIM.  It’s a platform game as much as a gadget game–see the App store–and it’s hard to see how Palm will mobilize developers to start cranking on yet another platform.  Palm will probably sell a bunch of Pres initially–the product has good buzz–but the cool kids are already building their lives around iPhones and Blackberries.” (Therese writes a bi-weekly column for MarketWatch called Tech Tales and, earlier this year, predicted Apple would sue Palm but has since retracted her prediction.)

We at Pimp My Pre have iPhones and Blackberries, but we’re definitely not cool because we’re moving to the Pre.

Also, “it’s hard to see how Palm will mobilize developers to start cranking on yet another platform”?? Do you know any developers? And it’s Java based – it’s not objective C like dealing with iPhone apps. (Hey, for my day job I write in C – I have the right to talk about it). Plus, developers develop. We’re like sharks that can’t stop swimming - because of their ADHD and knowledge that, around this last reef, is one more fish.

So far, Palm has been a little more open than Apple about the platform. I said a little – OK, very little, but it sounded good. Given the wide range of knowledge that already exists for Java and AJAX, developing for the Pre will be much easier for less seasoned developers who have never touched C (cough, web guys, cough). Just kidding, I work with some web guys and they could do it – if they had to. They just don’t have to. But the Pre, with the Mojo SDK, are set up to allow developers to quickly introduce new apps due to the language it is based on. We predict that Palm Pre apps production will overcome iPhone apps at a rate of at least 2 to 1 because of simplicity alone.

I guess it’ll only take peer pressure to beat the Pre out of the market though.
“You want to be cool don’t you? Get the iPhone or a Blackberry. Only cool people have iPhones and Blackberries. All us soccer mom tech wanna be’s and corporate idiots that don’t know how to use the phones have them. You want to be like us, dont you?”

Um, no. We’re going to develop some fun, kick ass apps and themes, we’re going to have a place where people can post theirs for free, and we’re going to be un-cool and do what we do. And the Pre wil be a success. Especially with soccer mom tech wannbe’s and corporate idiots – unfortunately.
