Hacking the Palm Pre

The WebOS image was ‘accidentally’ released with a java program that is used to restore your pre available here. While we admit, we did have a look, try some hacks and learned a lot – and were even able to create a couple of small and fun apps, there really is now way for the regular person that isn’t a developer to install these on their phones. You also run the risk of bricking your phone and/or leaving it open for others to hack your phone.

If you really wanted to hack into your Pre, instructions can be found all over the web. We don’t suggest it unless you absolutely know what you’re doing.

That being said, after looking over the code, we see plenty of opportunity to make apps to Pimp your Pre. Changing the SMS alert and notification tones was an easy app to create but, again, there’s no easy way for us to distribute that to you until the SDK is released. Then we can add the apps to the Repository for you to download and install OTA.

Trust us, as soon as we can do it, you’ll get the app.

Can’t wait for the SMS tone changing app. The one it came with is just obnoxious.

      We agree!
We don’t want to step on Palms toes though, and start putting out hacks. We’ll keep working on Palm to give us the SDK and access to put out the apps.
