Where Do We Go From Here?

Loads of new Palm news lately. Most of your phones have probably been updated to WebOS 1.0.3.

Palm announced that they will not be releasing the SDK until the end of the summer, so we have to keep woring on figuring this out ourselves.

And Pimp My Pre is just shy of 1000 registered users. Wow. Thanks everyone!

There have been requests for apps, but most involve modifying Palm’s code or infringing on Sprint’s control over it. Think outside the box!
We’re already working on our main app, but wondered if there was something in particular you;d like to see.

I’ll start the list – Solitaire.

Why? I have 6 kids and spend a lot of time waiting for them at the dentist, doctor, park……

Also, if you have an idea, and are a developer that wants to help implement it, post that too.

thanks for the notifications app.. very handy….
what about a SMUGMUG(.com) app to upload photos to that service?

  2. Csquared says:

    1. Next appointment on lock screen

    2. Any kid game. Something to keep my 7yr old busy.

  3. joems says:

How about a photo crop/zoom tool? with the ability to send it via email and mms

  4. arnoldmq says:

    how about some video

  5. htbc says:

Yes I have a big request… on my Treo there was a program that allowed me to hook my phone to my laptop and have wireless internet on my computer anywhere I had phone service. It was great.

It was called PDAnet and can still be found at http://www.junefabrics.com/palmnet/ If you could make it work on the Pre it would be the best app on the market.

As a developer I’m psyched about the whole thing. How would you (this is an open question to any developers who have use the SDK) rate the difficulty of programming for WebOS compared to say Windows Mobile or PalmOS (or any other mobile platform you have worked on)? I have read the sample chapter about how the user experience works and some of the paradigms, and so I’m mainly curious about how different they are and if it is mind-blowingly different.

Solitaire was at the top of my list as well, since I have 4 kids and regularly find myself sitting and doing nothing. I also like Backgammon a lot. The AI part may be challenging. If there was a co-op mode for playing against other people real time, that would be even better.

I think a crossword app would be really cool too, and easy. I have seen javascript versions of crossword puzzles for ages.

A drawing program (okay that may be crazy hard) that is really simple. My kids would love that.

I am interested in applications that could be played more offline. How about an app where I can cut out part of the sound in one of my existing songs or sounds for use as a ringer.

Anything that would allow me to record my own voice would be good.

Voice-command dialing? That’s one that I really miss from the older phone days that I lost when I got my Treo 650. I know I could have payed for it, but it wasn’t that big of a deal. Also, as I mentioned I have 4 kids, so I just don’t spend money like some techies do.

I’m not sure what assistance I can lend, but I would love to do whatever I can.

We don’t have the SDK, and I personally haven’t programmed for windows modile or palmos, but I’d assume this is ver different. This isn’t what I’d call an operating system. The phone is a mobile linux web server and the OS is all javascript. If you know javascript and html, it should be extremely simple.

  7. Infared07 says:

    1. Well I would love to see games like block buster or poker.

    2. A flash light app so we can take advantage of the bright led.

    3. Also I really like the thought of being able to edit and crop pictures.

    4. Also maybe a program that locks certain thing like photos or whole folders so if I let my little brother or sister pick up my phone I don’t have to worry about them seeing my party pics lol.

    5. Being able to play classic games is always fun how about Ms. Pac-man

  8. kphill1 says:

I will like to sms memos

  9. choosemath says:

Alright, then I’m ready to get to writing. I just wish I knew were to start for now.

  10. ChasPRE says:

These glorious New Applications in the Palm PRE’s App Catalog are very Nice

HOWEVER as former Palm Treo owners these are NOT what we are looking for most.

Besides the obvious on everyone’s want list: Ringtone manager, PDANET, Volumecare, ListPRO, RRS Reader, Desktop Backup/Hotsync

Here’s what I miss most on my Treo700p

Program Name (For the TREO Series) / Function

KeyCaps600 (http://www.nekito.net/~dgsachs/palm/) – A Simple program whereby if you press longer on a keyboard key it goes to upper case, then the symbol (Wow, do I miss this simple concept)

Textmaster (Stevenscreek.com) – Pastes predefined blocks of text into email replies – a Drop down list of your phrases is activated by a key combination or in the case of the PRE, may I suggest the right gesture area which is very rarely utilized

Simple utility to enable right and left keyboard arrows to move through text

Select All Function in the copy/paste utility

Call Shield (mantragroup.com)- Selectively Blocks callers by phone number, or groups of numbers in the phone number while playing an assigned custom mp3, options to hangup immediately or play an mp3 assigned to that number. Out of Area and Blocked CID options

Pocket TV Browser (Using Schedule Direct.org) – TV Listings with movie summaries, search, favorite programs etc

    Thanks!

I would love to see an app to keep track of my checking acct kinda like spb finance, that’s the one app I’m lost without from winmo, you use ur debit card and put the info in ur phone, you never screw ur checking acct up.

  12. yankees368 says:

    +1 for a flashlight/LED app

  13. cdmker says:

+1 for checking acct app. Thanx

  14. vandyfc says:

I agree apps are great and I would use a lot of what are mentioned. I would like to see some minor fixes. Seperate Email and Text tones (I guess like the old palms did) and a default view for the calender. Lastly, I keep my clock up during the night for easy tell of time. Would be nice if it stayed on while charging so I wouldn’t have to wake up the clock.
Anything you guys add is great as we don’t have them now so it’s a plus. We just appreciate what you do and are capable of.

    Thanks for it all !!

  15. phillipah says:

someone should develop a homebrew app store… it should work alot like the current one… I think that should be the first step.

    • admin says:

That one’s already in the works – with more functionality than just installing apps.
When it’s done, we’ll need more beta testers to test apps from other developers too.
      I’ll post when we’re ready.

  16. bradenpre says:

Perhaps this gets into modifying “palm proprietary software,” but what about an app that monitors if there are notifications currently loaded into the notification area, and causes the trackball light to blink every 15 seconds when there are active notifications on a phone that has its screen turned off. I wouldn’t mind having that functionality, even if it meant leaving an app running on a card in the background…call it the “Enhanced notification app” or something.

  17. Hamilton says:

I would love a time clock app. A simple application that would allow you to keep track of periods of time and add them up, as well as an LED flash light.

  18. mbord says:

LED notification…the little ball at bottom of phone to light up to show you a missed call or text.
    Text message forwarding..group text messaging..
and so on ..and so on

  19. lougarr117 says:

A Chess game. I love to play chess on my Ipod touch. I would like to be able to do the same on my palm pre…

  20. joek71 says:

    2 Apps.
    1-Virtual Keyboard
2-some kind of led read out that i am getting a call, text, sms or missed a call, i think since the gesture area is clear you can make it different colors light up. This be a awesome for everyone.

  21. Benjaminxbeard says:

how about an app to add different engines to the global search? i know you can do those things if you root your pre but i would rather do it through an app.

  22. Benjaminxbeard says:

oops and i meant to also say a way to add and remove pages from the launcher.

  23. Knights_09 says:

I like being able to change notification sounds now but I like to put some of the ringtones I made as notification sounds but I can’t because when a message comes in the ringer won’t stop playing even when I open the message it would be nice to be able to make it stop when I open the message just a suggestion

  24. coachdvc says:

Now that the SDK for Palm Pre has been leaked (http://www.everythingpre.com/forum/palm-webos/palm-pre-mojo-sdk-download-leaked-to-the-web-21385.html)can you use it to shore up the notification, alert sounds?

  25. TiphanieMinaj says:

    I would like to see……

    1. Emoticons with bright colors and faces. (instead of having to make boring ones like this>>>>>:))

    2. The Bejeweled game. I loooooove Bejeweled!!!!

    3. Flashing green and/or red LED light. (I was thinking upper right hand corner) but the little ball would be a great idea or the right side of the ball where you slide your finger at (like the person said above)

    4. The ability forward text msgs, copy & paste, send group texts.

    5. The little pretext thing, where it said stuff like “Meeting at…” “I love you” “Can you pick the kids up”, etc.

    6. And las but not least…. The ability to put a signature text at the end of a sms text.

*Basically if it had everything my Treo 755p had!!!!!!!* hahahaha.

  26. robapodaca says:

How about a basic file system where we can see what is in memory? Maybe even the ability to delete and even send (via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi) files?

  27. jman210 says:

I really liked the idea where you can lock individual folders of just the pic folder overall. sounds very handy

and of course… who wouldnt like a couple of games.

    THANKS FOR EVERYTHING!!!

  28. jrpope1 says:

make all my ringtone show in the list. It must limit how many it shows.

  29. KnoxBNYC says:

I love all your ideas. Your “Pimp My Sounds” is freakin’ great! Thank you thank you!!!

You said above that “If you know javascript and html, it should be extremely simple.”

But how do you compile the javascript and HTML into an IPK file???

And where did you get the list of webOS API handles?

Inquiring minds want to know (if you aren’t too terribly proprietary about these things). :)

  30. daddiesliljewel05 says:

    I suggest more games..

The abilit to operate left and rigt..up and down easily

The ability to copy and paste everything…im’s..sms messages..pics on the internet…
    Also the abilit to record…camcorder

That’s all I can think of rigt now but its a lot of things I thougt pre was goin to have the same as the centro but I was wrong…I look forward to whatever updates occur tho

  31. rjnethington says:

I had an instinct before my pre and when I would get a txt it would ring in my bluetooth just like if I was getting a call. Any chance of getting the pre to do that?

  32. joek71 says:

    Hey guys make this:
    http://www.precentral.net/email-landscape-mode-no-rooting-required

Someone make this perm so we wont have to keep entering the code every time.

    Thanks

  33. rvajuggalo says:

    Some Text Forwarding please

  34. DJLoose says:

Predictive text with the ability for you to add words to your own “custom dictionary” i.e. something similar to T9 or SureType, but maybe with its own spin on it so it will be unique to the Pre. Or a direct port of one of those two would work too..

  35. DJLoose says:

If the PimpMyPre admin(s) find that apps from the Apple App Store are easily ported to the WebOS, I recommend creating a forum or some type of voting system where we can suggest/vote on/request which apps will be ported over first, with the most popular ones getting the first port and so on down the line, to ensure that majority rules and we don’t end up with 20 homebrew fart apps before we get some other, more useful ones.

  36. DJLoose says:

one other thing.. could add an edit, or at least a delete button to our posts on these pages so we can edit/remove posts with errors. (ones that were created by our own user name, of course)

  37. Mike S says:

Here is a good one for you to work on ….

When you add a contact or a web “bookmark” to the launcher,

Instead of adding it to the launcher, allow it to be added to

the “desktop” like the favorites menu on the instinct ( one

of the only things I like about the instinct )

    Thanks

  38. Infared07 says:

Ok here is another one for the madd scientists out there i used to have an instinct and one feature that i loved and i miss now is, if there was an address in your contacts you could just click on the address and the phone would automatically go over to your GPS and give you turn by turn directions. Could someone please make a work around so it disables google maps. Its an ok program… But really whats the point of it if we have turn by turn GPS on the phone!

  39. sward78 says:

So what happens now with the new update 1.0.4, how will we install home brew apps now?

  40. leetsepeak says:

We can just use the leaked SDK to do it, using the .bat. At least if you’ve rooted it.

  41. planetcoffee says:

    Sirius radio app

  42. straynger says:

I don’t know if these have been mentioned somewhere along the way already, i apologize for the repetition. Heres a little wish list of mine:

    - Ability to modify the 5 quick launch icons on the main screen

    - Ability to copy text strings to computer

    - Addition or modification of launch icons. The Instinct allowed you to make a favorite button of starting a new text to a certain person (gf/bf)withought have to go to message and click new.

    - Spell checker, a few of my phone would indicate the word would be spelled wrong, you could click on it and it gave you the option to fix it. very helpful in long texts.

    - Access to online Picture Mail?

    - Indicator light for missed call or messages

  43. DJLoose says:

would definitely spend ridiculous amounts of time on a fulltiltpoker.com (or even .net) client for the WebOS…

  44. Matt2h says:

I will list a few that are most important to me and, which have been widely-discussed as curious omissions on Palm’s party.

    – TEXT MESSAGE FORWARDING

    – TETHERING/DATA TRANSFER. (The ability to use the tethered phone as a modem or internet gateway/proxy server)

    – CUSTOM TONES FOR TEXT MESSAGES, E-MAIL, NOTIFICATIONS, ETC. (once the sdk is out or you find another workaround or whatever)

    – FLASH PLAYER. Supposedly, Adobe is developing a version of flash for Linux Web OS. It can’t come soon enough.

    – The ability to add more quick launch icons somehow

    – The fixing of copy and paste issues. Copy and paste does not appear to work the way it should. It’s intermittent.

    – I find that the web os does not display animated GIFs. Certain animated pictures like doppler radar images do not animate the way they’re supposed to. Like those found at http://www.wunderground.com or http://www.accuweather.com

    – Support for WAP. If you attempt to open certain file extensions like WAP files, you’re met with a virus-like succession of opening browser windows. What’s up with that?

    – The capability of using the phone’s camera to capture video has been frequently mentioned. I don’t care as much about this one, but it’s out there.

    – I find that the phone’s ability to play videos is rather limited. I would like to see support for more types of video files, and support for codecs and things of that sort.

    – Is there any way to send faxes over a cell phone? I’m ready to do away with my landline, but I do have a need to fax from time to time. (That, and I’m stuck in a promotional package)

    – Until we get flash, an application (like the youtube application) to be able to visit its pornographic progeny like YouPorn, PornoTube, and RedTube? Come on, everybody does it.

    – A status bar and more options for the/a music player

    – SOMETHING to save my battery power!
