So the Pre made its debut at the PlayBite event in London yesterday and it seems that it’s not the well polished machine the North American version has been here in the states. Accounts from people at the event tell of everything from Google Maps failure, to the device not being allowed to be photographed due to “issues”. Such a shady display seems to be peeving some of our cross-lantic friends.

We here at PMP are filing this under, “not too bloody surprised”. Don’t get us wrong, we looooove the Pre. It’s one sexy lil phone. BUT, anyone who’s made the pond crossing or has simply googled European phone selection, knows that over there, the Pre is simply normal. If you’re not familiar, I’ll give you a taste:

Take this general comparison. Handset maker HTC releases sets over in Europe many months before they hit U.S. soil. When they hit over there they contain many features not found on U.S. versions. For instance, front-facing video conferencing technology is common and carrier supported. Added to this, European carriers seem less apt to “tinker” with the manufacturers specs post production. While carrier subsidization over here has provided cheaper prices, it also gives Verizon, Sprint and etc. free license to add/remove/cripple specs at will. Big Red seems to be the worst in this game, but I digress.

Bottom line, as exciting as the Pre is here in the states, it’s kinda business as usual over there. So yea, don’t count on the trend creating craze that the iPhone managed with throngs of European Apple drones. But don’t worry American Pre fans. We’re still here and we still love you.

Pimp My Pre will stil host ringtones and wallpapers and will have more news soon. The reason for the switch was to keep application development as it’s own process and not take away from the fun of PMP. One serious site, one not so serious site.

Well, we’re right where we wanted to be. You guys are working with us to build an excellent app and an excellent community. Members like KingJain are filling the repo with all those tasty ringtones, wallpapers and apps you guys want to truly trick-out your pre. In fact, last time I checked, we were up to 1898 Wallpapers, 1128 Sounds and 483 Ringtones! Nice work guys! Keep on uploading. And while you’re at it, we can always use more apps. If you are a developer, or know one, come join the party. We’re working on a killer method to update your apps as well as a few other benefits we’re sure you’ll love.

And you downloaders out there, we’re proud of you too. Like clockwork today, about every hour or so, we have received emails and phone calls from our hosting company saying to cool it with all the traffic. I guess they’re jealous that we have more friends than they do. Which we still believe is purely due to our high standards of grooming and down home southern charm. Well, that, or people really like the app. Like these delightful members we found commenting on the site:

Apparently, some people wanted to see the actual standalone app we made to change ringtones for SMS and Email.  So we made a vid of the one that’s installed on my Pre, instead of the one hacked into the Sounds and Ringtones section. The plan is to expand that app to include more functionality. We’re also busy working on getting the repository app working; which shouldn’t be too long now. So start getting wallpapers together and, as a preview of what it can do, get some icons ready to build your own themes.

Sorry – we can’t install this app on your pre — YET! But an installer can’t be far behind with how quickly we’re working.

This is a quick example of what we’ve been working on. This isn’t our stand alone app, because we haven’t built an installer for the Pre yet, so we hacked it into the Sounds and Ringtones section.

It just shows that YES we can code and YES we are ready to get these out to you. It’s only a matter of time.

That’s right, we’re officially filing our first complaint. You’re on notice palm! We have three able…..well normally you’d say bodied here, but I mean, we spend a lot of time in front of the computer….soo…minded, BINGO….We have three able Minded developers sitting here chomping at the bit to start doing amazing things with this so far amazing device. Yes that’s right, we said it. Sure there are bug reports popping out all over the place but that’s to be expected from an initial release. But other than a few bad apples the device itself is A OK in our books. Only problem we have, SOFTWARE! Oh Pre, How I loath your software, Let me count the ways:

1. We can’t change the sounds for ringtones or messages – we could fix that
2. We can’t directly download ANYTHING – we could fix that
3. Can’t use a gif as a wallpaper? – we could fix that
4. Can’t create a theme by changing icons, card colors, etc.. – we could fix that
5. Can’t lock your email inbox – we could fix that
6. Setting an alarm gives you an endless run of pop-up reminders – AARGH – we WANT to fix that
7. We can’t forward text messages – PLEASE let us fix that
8. oh, I could go on……. just let us code!

So yes, our laundry list is quite full, but wanna know a little secret??…..Not only would we be able to fix this stuff with the SDK, but we would feel more connected to the device in doing so. It boils down like this, think of the open source guy at your office. (side note for you regular people out there, you probably don’t have one of these, it’s mainly an anomaly that occurs in offices doing things of varying nerd-dom, which begs me to ask, what are you doing here? But anyhoo, I digress ) You know the guy that’s gonna rain on all your Mac, Microsoft and Adobe dreams with stories of doing everything and more with his free and open products. You wanna know why he’s attached to that stuff like a horny Chihuahua to the first open humpable leg…..besides it being free, the openness allows him to make it HIS. Whereas the Pre to us right now is only, the palm device One of us owns (he’s the only one with any money around here, blogging don’t pay kids, stay in school) But to him it’s still Palm’s device.

But you start letting us tweak and play and create and they will become ours and we will defend to the death our love for them. And every time anybody walks in with an iPhone or a WM device, or god forbid a dumbphone we will assail them with our knowledge and love and maybe create a convert.

So Palm, do the right thing. Let it loose. We NEED it. We want the Palm Pre to be OUR Pre. You’ve had your time. Oh, and I mean, if you’re not too busy you could send two more over this way for us less monied staff of PMP. That would be SWEET.

The commercial, short film style, Palm Pre ad features Shaolin students choreographed by the people who choreographed the Beijing Olympics. In this “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon” style commercial, shot in China to promote a phone that’s being released in the US (huh?), the Shaolin perform Kung Fu and … well, we’ll find out the rest at 7:30.

We’ll be embedding the video here as soon as it’s posted, so you don’t encounter any network problems if you try to watch it on Facebook, or you don’t have a Facebook account. Why would someone want a smartphone and not have a facebook account? I don’t know, but it’s possible. I could go through scenarios about stalkers, midget circus clowns and a spatula that I thought of, but that might take awhile.

Anyway – on with the show! This should be interesting. I wonder if the Palm Pre has a pollution detector so we know exactly what the actors were exposed to. Awww, c’mon. You know it was funny.

From an official press release from Palm, you I-tunes faithfuls out there are in luck. Apparently the media sync function of the Pre is custom tailored for I-tunes awesomeness. So all those tunes you got brewin’ on your computer or all those episodes of cartoons  (I mean, Porn.) you wish your friends didn’t know you still watch despite the fact that you’re a 45 year old gas station attendant living with your parents getting allowance for mowing the lawn will be easily synced onto that new toy of yours. No clue as to if there will be any limitations or any such tom-foolery, but due to its necessity to compete with the I-phone we’d say they would be wise to make it as seamless and useful as possible. But who knows, there’s a lot of common sense being ignored in the cell phone community, so anything can happen.

But as for us here at PMP, we’ve already started creating our “Pre Hotttness” playlist in I-tunes

So, our intial reaction to the first leaked-photo captured via the Palm Pre was… not too shabby. I mean, obviously if you’re a photography nut or just a well educated stalker you may laugh at the lack of quality when this image is zoomed. But let’s be honest, those of you in those categories will not be participating in your “hobbies” using a cell phone camera. So for a phone camera; we approve. Heck, my 5MP Samsung Omnia takes a picture quite similar in quality to this one, so bravo(although admittedly the Samsung’s snapper is just plain poopy). The only thing we are really disappointed with, in considering its quality, is our inability to rate the “hot or not”-standing of the lovely female riding the horsey. We are torn whether she is hott, not, jailbate, both or neither. And if she’s hott and not jailbate we are completely unsatisfied with this camera because it failed to then remove her top.

Go ahead boys, ogle away; we won’t judge you…..we leave that up to God.
